Fertility & The Vaginal Microbiome
Infertility can be complex – and emerging research reveals an important piece that’s often underestimated: the vaginal microbiome. This blog explores how the microbial balance in the vagina can influence conception and how naturopathic interventions can help improve fertility outcomes.
What is the vaginal microbiome?
The vaginal microbiome is an intricate ecosystem of microorganisms, mostly beneficial Lactobacillus species, that naturally defend against infection and help maintain a healthy acidic pH. When these helpful bacteria dominate, they create a protective environment for sperm, support embryo implantation, and help reduce inflammation that could otherwise hinder conception.
How Imbalances Impacts Fertility
A disrupted vaginal microbiome (known as vaginal dysbiosis) can be triggered by stress, antibiotics, contraceptives, hormone imbalances, infections, inflammation, diet, and/or lifestyle factors.
This imbalance can lower Lactobacillus counts and allow harmful bacteria such as Gardnerella or Ureaplasma to thrive.
Vaginal dysbiosis can affect fertility through:
· Increasing risk of bacterial vaginosis (BV) and other infections
· Lowering sperm survival rates and motility, making fertilisation more difficult
· Increasing inflammation, which can reduce embryo implantation rates and raise the risk of early miscarriage or preterm birth.
Studies show that women with low Lactobacillus levels experience reduced chances of conception, lower IVF success, and higher rates of early pregnancy complications compared to those with a well-balanced microbiome.
Naturopathic Approaches to Restoring Balance
Naturopathy takes an integrative approach to infertility, looking at root causes and supporting the body’s ability to heal itself.
My strategies for healing the vaginal microbiome may include:
· Testing the vaginal microbiome to identify imbalances
· Using targeted probiotics and herbal medicine for reducing inflammation, supporting immune function, and balancing microbial populations
· Providing nutrition support optimal for the vaginal environment and fertility
· Lifestyle changes such as stress management, gentle exercise, and improved sleep hygiene
· In some cases, antibiotics may be needed for persistent infections, followed by probiotic and herbal support to rebuild the microbiome and prevent recurrence.
When to Seek Help
Women experiencing BV, thrush, STI’s, pelvic infections, unexplained infertility, or failed IVF cycles will benefit from microbiome testing and naturopathic care. Addressing microbiome imbalances 3–6 months before conception is ideal, but support at any stage will bring benefits for reproductive health.
If you’re seeking 1:1 care for your vaginal health, including advanced microbiome assessment and personalised naturopathic support, I would love to support you. Book in for a consultation today OR a free 15 minute discovery call if you are interested in learning more before booking in.
